Cumbria South Lakes Informal Social - Fri 1st Sep 2023,

          The Grange Hotel, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria.

It is now several years since the Society’s South Cumbrian Branch held its own ‘get together’. 2023’s event took place on 1st September and was arranged with active encouragement from our President, Carter Croft.

The venue was the Grange Hotel in Grange-over-Sands and proved to be an excellent location, being midway between members living in the Windermere and Kendal area and those from Barrow and Ulverston. The hotel overlooked lovely Morecambe Bay, and provided excellent facilities including a spa and swimming pool for those staying overnight.  Hot soup, bread rolls and sandwiches were provided with all attendees putting their contributions into a collection box. Just over forty members and partners made advanced bookings, but we were then hit by a rail strike necessitating at least four members who were coming from further afield to cancel their rooms.

All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with many old friends meeting up and exchanging memories. The Headmaster gave an excellent address followed by a few words from our good President. There was an interesting and informative update from Peter Lever concerning the school’s future with Full Circle and the possible consent for renewed coal mining in the area and the importance of the school’s mineral rights.

We do hope to repeat this South Lakes informal social format at some point in the future. We are currently considering changing the venue and the date perhaps to later in September or October.
